Who can joint custody benefit?

On Behalf of Law Offices of Andrew S. Guisbond | Feb 4, 2020 | Child Custody |

When Massachusetts parents divorce, they have a lot to face. They do not deal with alimony or spousal support alone. They also handle matters like child custody and child support payments. For many couples, this is the most stressful part of the process. Today we will look at joint custody, one of the custody options available to you.

Joint custody has many benefits for all members of the family. But the biggest positive impact it may have is on the child. When experts discuss the benefits of joint custody, the child is their top priority. This makes sense, as it aligns with how the court will view your situation, too. When determining child custody, a child should:

  • Have access to ample opportunities
  • Be in a financially stable situation
  • Not have their life uprooted
  • Live in an environment they are comfortable in
  • Have their basic needs met
  • Have extracurricular opportunities and advantages available

These are possible even with sole custody. But they are much easier to achieve with joint custody. Both parents work together to support their child on a different levels. You double their emotional, mental and financial support. This can even benefit the parents in some cases. Despite the hardships and burdens of divorce, the aftermath does not have to be negative. Parents may find support in a positive-neutral relationship.
